Together with medi Australia: Donation of lumbar and back orthoses in Papua New Guinea
medi for help and the non-profit organization PNG Angels, based in Australia, are united by one basic idea: helping socially disadvantaged people in emergency situations and improving their living conditions in the long term. To support the work of PNG Angels in Papua New Guinea, medi for help, together with medi Australia, is donating 110 lumbar and back orthoses for medical care.
This is the mission of PNG Angels: volunteer medical teams travel to Papua New Guinea several times a year to perform life-saving head and spinal operations. The non-profit association is dependent on support. medi for help would like to help here and has therefore donated over 100 lumbar and spinal orthoses together with the medi branch in Australia.
The medical aids from medi are used for post-operative rehabilitation and as a conservative treatment method. medi Australia took care of the organization and logistics to ensure that everything ran smoothly.
“We are very grateful to medi for help and medi Australia for the generous donation. This will make a significant contribution to further advancing our commitment in Papua New Guinea and providing medical care to the people there,” says Susannah Hales, Director PNG Angeles Limited. She also reports numerous positive responses from the patients treated so far – an improved quality of life and greater participation in daily social activities.
Training of local medical staff enables sustainable care
medi for help supports help for self-help in order to be able to continue a commitment over a longer period of time and thus offer people continuous help.
PNG Angels also embodies this philosophy: in addition to medical treatment, the focus is on sustainable care. The employees train the local healthcare providers in Papua New Guinea to enable long-term treatment of patients – even when PNG Angels itself is no longer actively on site. One example: a patient received a medi back orthosis by airmail for conservative treatment. A video call with PNG Angels enabled the medical staff on site to provide the product.
